Akron Public Schools closed its buildings on Wednesday due to a network outage caused by a cybersecurity breach. The district planned to reopen on Thursday with most regular programming, athletics, and offices available.
Office staff will work remotely to access WiFi, according to Superintendent Mary Outley. Summer programs, except for credit recovery, will return to their regular in-person schedules. Credit recovery, which allows students to make up failed or incomplete classes through online coursework, was canceled for the rest of the week.
Cybersecurity Incident Details
As of Wednesday evening, it was unclear if any student or staff data had been compromised, or how the breach occurred. Board of Education President Barbara Sykes said she was not aware of the district receiving any ransom demand as part of the cybersecurity incident.
Ohio law requires school districts and municipalities to take public action in response to a ransomware attack. The district’s response to the breach is ongoing, with an investigation into the cause and impact of the incident.
