A new business in Norton Commons is leaning into the growing popularity of needlepoint as more people turn to screen-free, hands-on hobbies.
The Minted Design
The Minted Design recently opened its brick and mortar location at Norton Commons, offering all things needlepoint. Owner Cindy Baerty said, “I predominantly needlepoint and everything that goes along with that from canvases, threads, needle minders. I mean, truly, it’s quite a plethora.” Inside the shop, customers are greeted by walls lined with colorful canvases and a personality that Baerty says reflects her own style.
According to AInvest, there’s been a surge in interest in screen-free, offline activities. Recently, there’s been a 160% increase in online search for analog hobbies, and searches for needlepoint are up 208% since last year. Baerty says the shop is designed to appeal to a younger generation of stitchers, part of a broader rise in so-called “analog hobbies.”
The appeal of needlepoint goes beyond simply unplugging. For many customers, it is also about finding connection and community in person. The Minted Design offers weekly needlepoint and mahjong classes on Thursdays, alternating each week between the two hobbies. Every Tuesday, the shop hosts a “Stab and Gab,” where people can gather and needlepoint together.
