Oviedo police are rolling out new barricades designed to prevent vehicles from entering crowded spaces, with their debut set for the city’s Fourth of July celebration.
Enhanced Safety Measures
Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman explained the importance of preparing for potential threats, referencing past incidents. The city recently invested nearly $200,000 in approximately 72 barricades designed to stop vehicles from entering crowded event spaces.
Some sections of the barricades can open in seconds, allowing emergency vehicles to pass through before locking back into place. Sgt. Robert Brunjes, of the Oviedo Police Department, demonstrated the barricades’ capabilities, noting their ability to stop all types of vehicles and close up to ten lanes of traffic.
Coleman highlighted the barricades’ capabilities, noting their ability to stop vehicles attempting to force their way through. Steel teeth embedded in the barricades dig into the pavement and the vehicle’s undercarriage, preventing the vehicle from moving forward.
