Camp Mystic, a Christian camp in Texas, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization after a catastrophic flood killed 25 girls and two teenage counselors, as well as the camp’s owner, Richard Eastland. The flood, which occurred on July 4, was part of a larger disaster that killed at least 136 people along a several-mile stretch of the Guadalupe River.
Bankruptcy Filing
The camp listed its debt as exceeding $10 million and its assets in the range of $100,001 to $500,000. The bankruptcy filing comes weeks after Camp Mystic halted plans to reopen this summer due to outrage from victims’ families and lawmakers.
Families of the victims have filed a lawsuit against the camp, alleging that the operators failed to take necessary steps to protect the girls as life-threatening floodwaters approached. The lawsuit and investigations into the flood are ongoing.
