Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced on Wednesday that he would likely hold bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump when the US leader attends the NATO summit in Turkey next month.
NATO Summit Details
The summit, scheduled for July 7-8, will bring together 32 NATO leaders, as well as officials from the alliance’s partners in the Gulf and Asia-Pacific region. Erdogan has emphasized the importance of Trump’s attendance to demonstrate unity within the alliance.
According to Erdogan’s communications director, Burhanettin Duran, burden-sharing will be a key agenda point at the summit. Turkey aims to reach a defense spending target of 3.5% + 1.5% by the end of 2030.
Representatives from the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, a partnership forum with some Middle Eastern countries, as well as Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Australia, will also attend the summit at the foreign ministers level.
