Jeep Cherokee vs Subaru Forester

The Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Forester are two new hybrid SUVs that have hit the market in the last two years. The Jeep Cherokee has been redesigned for 2026 and features a hybrid powertrain that gets more than 30 mpg. The Subaru Forester gained its hybrid powertrain option for 2025, improving its fuel economy, performance, and refinement.

Fuel Economy and Performance

The Cherokee gets an EPA-estimated 37 mpg in combined city/highway driving, while the Forester Hybrid gets 35 mpg combined. Both SUVs have decent power for daily driving, with the Cherokee accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds and the Forester Hybrid in 8.8 seconds.

Comfort and Utility

The Forester has a smoother ride over bumps and ruts than the Cherokee and has more comfortable front seats. The back seats are similar in both SUVs, with enough space to install child seats easily. The Subaru Forester’s boxy cargo area is ideal for hauling luggage, groceries, or outdoor recreational gear.

Technology Features

The Subaru Forester Hybrid has a big portrait-oriented screen, but it can be slow to boot up and respond to on-screen buttons. The Jeep Cherokee’s driver assist features are more sophisticated and enjoyable to use.

On-Road and Off-Road Driving

Despite Jeep’s off-roading reputation, the Cherokee has less ground clearance than the Forester and lacks robust all-wheel-drive systems and off-road drive modes. The Forester is better suited for tackling dirt roads or trails.

Price and Value

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee starts at $36,995, while the Forester Hybrid starts at $36,180. The Forester Hybrid comes with more features for the money, including standard heated front seats and a standard power-adjustable driver’s seat.
