A new boiling pool has formed in Yellowstone National Park after a small hydrothermal explosion in the Biscuit Basin area. The pool, which is about 6.5 × 5.3 meters in size, was created by collapse, as indicated by the lack of surrounding ejecta.
The formation time of the pool is uncertain, but it is believed to have occurred between June 14 and June 16. The pool saw more activity on June 23, when an eruption sent steam and dirty water into the air. This eruption was the first to be observed by the USGS since June 18.
The USGS has a camera fixed on the pool, and a video of the eruption can be viewed on their Facebook page. The new boiling pool is a reminder of the dynamic geological activity that occurs in Yellowstone National Park.
