A sleeping 2-year-old child was struck by gunfire in an overnight shooting in Elkhart, Indiana, and is currently in critical condition.

The Elkhart Police Department is investigating the shooting, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. on June 23 in the 1000 block of W. Garfield Ave. The child was first taken to Elkhart General Hospital before being flown to the IU Health Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for further treatment.
Authorities have not released additional details on the child’s condition beyond confirming critical injuries. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence and work to determine what led to the gunfire at the residence.
