West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes in southern Indiana, according to state health officials. The Floyd County Health Department reported that a pool of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus the week of June 14.
No human cases have been identified, but residents are advised to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Health officials recommend using DEET and other mosquito repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants, and checking properties for mosquito breeding sites.
Homeowners can call 812-948-4726 to have a mosquito trap placed at their home. West Nile Virus can cause mild illness, such as fever, headache, and body aches, but more serious cases can result in death, especially for older people and those who are immunocompromised.
