The body of a second missing fisherman was found on a beach near Shoreline Drive in Stratford on Saturday morning after a week-long search and recovery operation.
Incident Details
The fisherman, identified by the Fairfield Police Department as 34-year-old Kwahiwi Edwards of Queens, N.Y., was reported missing on Saturday, June 13 after he and another fisherman were stranded on the reef at Penfield Beach and an incoming tide surrounded them.
A witness entered the water in an attempt to help the fishermen. The witness was able to assist one fisherman, but ultimately both the witness and the fisherman were swept into deeper water.
A Fairfield Police boat was able to rescue the witness and fisherman, but was not able to locate Edwards.
The active search and rescue operation suspended on June 13 and the Fairfield Police Department shifted to pursue a recovery effort in the days that followed.
Water safety experts warn beachgoers and fishermen of the Connecticut coast’s unpredictable water conditions. People are encouraged to check tide conditions before heading into the water, which can be tracked through several apps.
