Indianapolis residents Susan and David Hunnicutt, both former public education employees, recently discovered they were eligible for state retirement benefits. The couple, who are now 62 years old, had not applied for the benefits despite being qualified due to their years of service.
Reclaim Your Retirement Initiative
The Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS) launched the “reclaim your retirement” initiative to connect former public employees with the benefits they earned. The initiative includes a database that allows Hoosiers to search for and claim their benefits. As of March, over $2.7 million in retirement benefits had been claimed by more than 400 people.
Susan, a former first-grade teacher, reading specialist, and library media manager, retired in 2023 to care for her grandson. David, who worked in the public sector for 26 years, is still working full-time selling technology to schools and businesses. The couple was pleasantly surprised to learn they were eligible for benefits and were able to claim them with the help of an INPRS representative.
The INPRS manages about $50 billion in assets on behalf of over 540,000 current and former public employees. The agency hopes to spread the word about benefit eligibility and combat misconceptions about who can collect and when.
