President David Hahn of Boise State University visited Parma Elementary School on Monday to announce how an $8 million federal grant will expand the university’s teacher‑training efforts in rural Idaho. The funding will support Project TRAIL, a five‑year partnership with nine school districts across southwestern Idaho.
Mentorship and Hands‑On Experience
Project TRAIL pairs aspiring teachers with experienced educators, giving them classroom experience, mentorship and additional support as they begin their careers. Hahn explained that the program aims to target schools that have historically been underserved, providing future teachers with the skills they need beyond academic instruction, such as classroom management, parent communication and relationship‑building with students.
Keeping Teachers in Rural Communities
The initiative is designed not only to prepare more teachers but also to encourage them to build long‑term careers in the communities where they grew up. “It’s a full‑circle moment when we see individuals who choose education and then choose to work in the community that they grew up in,” said Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield, who joined Hahn on the visit.
Critchfield emphasized that recruiting and retaining teachers outside the Treasure Valley remains a top priority for Idaho schools. She noted that investing in educators directly benefits students, especially when teachers can identify learning gaps and tailor instruction to each child’s needs.
Beyond Recruitment
In addition to teacher recruitment, Project TRAIL will expand family‑literacy resources and create leadership opportunities for seasoned educators to serve as mentors. The program’s broader goal is to strengthen student literacy while helping districts develop a sustainable teacher workforce.
The five‑year initiative will involve nine districts throughout southwestern Idaho, with the grant providing the resources needed to make rural classrooms more attractive and supportive workplaces for new teachers.
