Police are actively searching for a suspect after 19‑year‑old Aliou Barry was shot to death on Friday afternoon while sitting in his vehicle in a parking space along Lafayette Road on Indianapolis’ northwest side.
Investigation underway
Officers arrived on scene within minutes after hearing gunfire. Barry was pronounced dead at the location. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) detectives have not released a motive, describing the homicide as still a mystery. “It’s unclear what the circumstances are that led to this,” IMPD officer Drew Brown said, adding that the community has already suffered a loss under “preventable circumstances.”
Community response
The Al‑Hikmah Islamic Center and the Indianapolis Muslim Community Association have expressed deep sorrow. “It is very unfortunate. Words cannot express what the community has gone through,” said Basiru Jallow of Al‑Hikmah. A prayer service was held at a worship center on 57th Street, where Barry had attended since childhood. “Ever since he was five to seven years old, he started learning the Quran,” Jallow noted, emphasizing the family’s grief.
Local residents placed flowers and a teddy bear at the parking spot where Barry was killed, a small gesture of solidarity. “It is important for all of us to come together. These are the future generations. We don’t want the future to be lost this way,” Jallow added, urging a community‑wide effort to address gun violence.
