A wildfire near Las Tusas in western New Mexico broke out Wednesday afternoon and has grown to an estimated 50 to 75 acres. The blaze has prompted evacuations along New Mexico Highway 266.
Fire crews first found the Tusas Fire around 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, in San Miguel County. Crews moved in quickly to assess the situation and begin containment efforts.
Officials say residents along New Mexico Highway 266 between mile markers 3 and 6 were ordered to evacuate. People living east of mile marker 3 were placed on Set status, meaning they should be ready to leave if conditions worsen.
In a 10 p.m. update, authorities refined the evacuation zones. Residents on Highway 266 between mile marker 4 and Highway 94, and on Highway 94 between Sapello and County Road A4A, are on Set status. Folks on County Road A4A are on Ready status.
The fire remains uncontained at 0 percent. Investigators are still working to determine what started the blaze.
Local officials continue to monitor the fire and will update evacuation orders as conditions change. Residents in the area should follow official guidance and avoid the affected roads until it is safe to return.
