The National Coffee Association (NCA) has requested that the Trump administration maintain the current tariff exemption on Brazilian green coffee. This move is intended to support the competitiveness of the US coffee industry, particularly in light of new product offerings such as ready-to-drink coffee cans.
Background
Brazil is the world’s largest producer and exporter of coffee, supplying approximately one-third of the US’s coffee needs. Last year, a 50% tariff was imposed on Brazilian coffee, causing disruptions in the US coffee industry until Washington included green coffee in a list of exemptions.
The NCA has also asked for instant coffee to be added to the list of tariff-free Brazilian products, citing its importance for the US coffee industry’s competitiveness.
