Teton Pass Trail Construction to Begin with Community Support

In Jackson, Wyoming, the long-awaited construction of the Teton Pass Trail is set to commence next week, marking a significant milestone for the local community. The project, which has garnered substantial support from private donors and local government, aims to enhance recreational opportunities in the area.

Community and Government Collaboration

The Teton County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) recently approved nearly $800,000 for the initial phase of the trail, which will run parallel to WY22 on the west side of Teton Pass. This funding is largely reimbursable through a federal BUILD grant, highlighting the collaborative effort between local and federal entities. The trail will connect Trail Creek Campground with the existing pathway in Idaho, extending as far as the budget allows, with the Coal Creek parking area as the target endpoint.

Tim Young, a dedicated volunteer with Save Teton Pass Trail (STPT), has been instrumental in raising funds for the project. Since last November, STPT has raised $1.1 million, with ongoing efforts to secure additional donations. Young expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress, noting the visible preparations underway.

Groundbreaking Ceremony and Future Plans

The official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 27 at Trail Creek Campground. The campground will remain open to visitors until mid-August, when it will be temporarily closed for construction staging and safety purposes. Heather Overholser, Teton County Public Works Director, emphasized the importance of this project for the community, noting the safety benefits of separating bicycles from highway traffic.

Whitaker Construction, based in Utah, has been selected as the construction manager at risk (CMAR) for the project. This approach allows for a more integrated design and construction process, ensuring the project stays within budget. Final bids are expected soon, with a presentation to the BCC scheduled for June 16.

Looking ahead, the county plans to apply for additional funding through the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program. This grant, if awarded, will support the second phase of construction, further extending the trail and enhancing local infrastructure.
