Seven Cabins Fire in Capitan Mountains Sees Improved Containment

The Seven Cabins Fire continues to burn in the Capitan Mountains of Lincoln County, New Mexico, but recent firefighting efforts have led to significant progress in containment. As of the latest reports, the fire has consumed 25,186 acres, with containment reaching 43%.

Evacuation Orders and Safety Measures

Residents living off State Highway 246 from Gap Road to Boy Scout Mountain are under a GO evacuation status, meaning they should evacuate immediately to ensure their safety. The village of Capitan itself remains under no threat and is not under evacuation orders. Small livestock, including horses, goats, pigs, and chickens, can be relocated to the fairgrounds in Capitan for safety.

The fire, which began on May 14 following a tragic medical aircraft crash, has been fueled by extremely dry conditions and dead vegetation within the Peppin Fire scar from 2004. These conditions have made it challenging for firefighting crews, but efforts to contain the blaze have been bolstered by additional personnel and equipment.

Firefighting Efforts

Firefighting crews have been actively working on the east side of the fire to mop up and increase containment. Additional crews have been constructing fire lines from the 536 road to access the southeast section of the fire. On the south side, crews have been clearing brush along the 57 road and using heavy equipment to improve fire lines.

The fire is being managed with significant resources, including 916 personnel, 32 crews, 36 engines, 6 helicopters, 30 water tenders, and 7 bulldozers. Public safety remains a top priority, and the public is advised to avoid the area to allow first responders to work without impediment.

Looking Ahead

The closure area has been expanded to include the Capitan Mountain area, from Highway 246 around the Forest Service boundary and south to Forest Service Road 57. This order will remain in effect until July 30 or until rescinded, whichever comes first. The community is urged to stay informed and heed all evacuation and safety orders as the situation develops.
