A rare encounter between a diver and a great white shark was captured on camera in the Mediterranean Sea. Derk Remmers, a volunteer with the Ghost Diving Foundation, was removing abandoned fishing nets from a shipwreck when he came face to face with the shark.
Conservation Efforts
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified white sharks as vulnerable to extinction, with the Mediterranean variant considered critically endangered. Conservationists are working to protect the species and its habitat.
Remmers’ encounter highlights the importance of removing ghost nets, which can entangle and kill marine life. The Ghost Diving Foundation and other organizations are working to remove these nets and protect the ocean’s ecosystem.
