Protests in Serbia Demand Early Elections Amid Allegations of Corruption

In Belgrade, Serbia, a significant protest unfolded as tens of thousands of citizens gathered to demand early elections and call for the end of President Aleksandar Vucic’s decade-long rule. The protests, which have been ongoing for over a year, were sparked by a deadly roof collapse that ignited a youth-led movement against alleged corruption and mismanagement.

Clashes with Police

The demonstrations took a tense turn as police in riot gear clashed with protesters, deploying tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd. Protesters, in turn, set fire to bins filled with rubbish as they were pushed back from the presidency building and nearby park where Vucic’s supporters have been camping since March of last year.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic reported that 23 individuals were detained during the clashes, and some police officers sustained injuries, though details on the severity were not disclosed.

Public Sentiment and Demands

Many protesters wore badges with red hands, symbolizing accusations against the government, and carried banners stating, “The students are winning.” The movement began after an awning collapse at a railway station in Novi Sad, which protesters and opposition leaders claim is indicative of broader governmental mismanagement.

President Vucic and his allies have denied the allegations of corruption and have stated that they are taking steps to address the issues stemming from the roof collapse. However, the public outcry continues to grow, with calls for accountability and transparency.

Voices from the Protest

Mirjana Nikolic, rector of Belgrade’s University of Arts, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the government’s fear of those defending their dignity and rights. The protestors’ numbers were estimated at 34,300 by police, while the Archive of Public Gatherings reported closer to 100,000 participants.

Dragan Djuric, a farmer from Sabac, expressed his motivation for attending the rally, stating, “I came here to show how many of us there are, how many unhappy citizens there are and that it is high time to organize elections to make things better.”
