Pope Leo XIV to Address Human Dignity in AI Era with New Encyclical

Pope Leo XIV is preparing to release a significant encyclical titled ‘Magnifica Humanitas,’ which focuses on preserving human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. The encyclical, set to be unveiled on Monday in Vatican City, marks Pope Leo’s first such document and addresses the growing concerns surrounding AI’s impact on human values.

AI and Human Dignity

Pope Leo, who has been vocal about the potential threats AI poses to human dignity, will be joined by leading Catholic figures and Chris Olah, co-founder of the AI company Anthropic, during the announcement. The pope’s encyclical comes at a time when there is increasing backlash against AI’s environmental, social, and educational effects.

In a recent Vatican conference on AI, Pope Leo emphasized the risks of prioritizing technological advancement over human dignity. He highlighted the dangers of chatbots and other technologies exploiting the human need for relationships. The pope’s focus on AI began shortly after his election in May 2025, when he addressed the College of Cardinals about the church’s role in guiding developments in AI that challenge human dignity, justice, and labor.

Historical Context and New Initiatives

Pope Leo chose his papal name in part to honor Pope Leo XIII, whose 1891 encyclical ‘Rerum Novarum’ addressed the challenges of the industrial revolution. In a nod to this historical context, Pope Leo XIV signed the new encyclical on the 135th anniversary of ‘Rerum Novarum.’ Additionally, he has approved the creation of a new Vatican commission to explore AI’s potential effects on humanity.

Charles Camosy, a professor of moral theology, anticipates that the encyclical will blend traditional Catholic teachings with new strategies specific to AI. He expects the document to firmly assert the church’s stance on human dignity amidst technological advancements.

Anthropic’s Role and Religious Perspectives

Anthropic, the AI company co-founded by Olah, has been actively engaging with religious leaders to discuss AI’s spiritual implications. The company has organized events inviting Christian leaders to explore the development of its AI systems. Anthropic’s AI, Claude, is guided by a constitution that shapes its identity, though some religious experts remain skeptical of AI systems being attributed with personhood.

Will Jones from the Future of Life Institute expressed concerns about AI companies’ eagerness to engage with religious leaders and the implications of granting AI systems any notion of personhood. He emphasized the importance of affirming and protecting human dignity, a theme expected to be central in the upcoming encyclical.

Vatican theologians, including Paolo Benanti, a Franciscan friar advising the pope on AI, have reiterated that human intelligence and dignity are unique and sacred, distinct from any digital intelligence. Benanti described human intelligence as characterized by wisdom, moral reasoning, and an orientation toward truth and beauty, qualities he attributes to the soul rather than computational outputs.
