Residents of Palm Bay Estates, a 55-plus community, are seeking city help for a permanent fix after a roadway collapse following heavy rain last week. David Perreault, an eight-year resident, hopes for a long-term solution, saying, “I want to see the road get fixed so that it’ll last 30, 40, 50 years.”
Temporary Repairs and Permanent Solutions
Although the roadway has been temporarily repaired, residents emphasize the need for a permanent solution. The city has stated that the road is not city-owned, but residents argue that the city’s pipe under the road is a factor in the collapse. Terry Stuhrmiller, president of the board of directors, highlighted the community’s financial limitations in addressing the issue, stating, “We don’t have the funds to handle a project like this. Obviously, we have a very low budget that we work with.”
City leaders have scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. Perreault noted, “We’re a retirement community. We’re not asking for any more than what any other retirement community would ask if there was such an issue.” The community is seeking a permanent fix to ensure the safety and accessibility of their roads.
