Affordable Access to the World Cup
Mayor Mamdani, speaking from Harlem’s Little Senegal neighborhood, emphasized the importance of making the games accessible to working people who have contributed to the sport’s growth. The tickets, which are significantly cheaper than the standard prices, will also include free roundtrip bus transportation to the stadium, ensuring that fans can easily attend the matches.
The initiative will cover seven of the eight matches held at the 82,000-seat MetLife Stadium, with approximately 150 tickets per game. The only exception is the final match on July 19, where ticket prices have soared to nearly $33,000. The tickets will be distributed through a lottery starting May 25, and measures will be in place to prevent scalping and ensure that tickets are used by New York City residents.
Ensuring Fair Distribution
To combat the potential resale of tickets, the city will implement a verification process to confirm residency. Tickets will be non-transferrable and distributed directly to fans as they board the bus on game day. This approach aims to keep the experience affordable and genuine for local fans.
Mayor Mamdani’s administration has been focused on making life more affordable for New Yorkers, extending beyond essentials like housing and groceries to include cultural and recreational activities. During his campaign, Mamdani advocated for FIFA to allocate a portion of tickets at discounted rates for local residents, although the current $50 tickets are provided by the joint host committee of New York and New Jersey, not directly from FIFA.
In addition to the championship game, MetLife Stadium will host five group stage matches and two knockout stage games, featuring teams like Brazil, France, Germany, and England. The matches begin on June 13, offering a diverse lineup of international soccer powerhouses for fans to enjoy.
