Firefighters in Michigan, who regularly face exposure to toxic ‘forever chemicals’ known as PFAS, have shown blood levels comparable to the average American, according to recent state data. This finding brings cautious optimism regarding state regulations aimed at limiting exposure to these chemicals.
Understanding PFAS Exposure
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are widespread in the environment and linked to health issues like cancer. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is investigating how exposure from firefighting foam and PFAS-treated gear affects first responders. Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive, emphasized the importance of these findings for understanding firefighters’ exposure to PFAS.
Despite PFAS being detected in all surveyed firefighters, many had levels similar to or lower than the general U.S. population. Environmental epidemiologist Jackie Goodrich expressed hope that Michigan’s regulatory efforts are effectively reducing PFAS exposure.
Regulatory Landscape
Michigan has implemented stringent guidelines on PFAS in drinking water since August 2020, and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration banned PFAS in firefighting foam in June 2022. However, the Environmental Protection Agency recently announced a rollback of certain federal PFAS standards, which contrasts with Michigan’s ongoing efforts.
Goodrich noted that the study does not specify how firefighters are exposed to PFAS, suggesting possible sources like diet, drinking water, and food packaging.
Challenges and Concerns
Steve Heim, a captain at the Lincoln Park Fire Department, highlighted the study’s limitations, noting that it provides only a narrow view of PFAS effects on firefighters. Heim pointed out that the study’s focus on blood draws does not account for PFAS deposits in other body areas such as brain matter and fatty tissue.
Firefighters at airports showed higher PFAS levels, likely due to increased use of PFAS-containing foams. Heim stressed the need for continued efforts to address the high cancer and illness rates among firefighters.
While Michigan’s study offers insights into PFAS exposure, it underscores the need for further research and action to protect firefighters from these persistent chemicals.
