Luna County Road Work Underway

Drivers in Luna County are being advised to expect reduced speeds and temporary traffic controls as road maintenance projects continue. The New Mexico Department of Transportation is currently doing chip sealing operations on NM 418 and multiple frontage roads along Interstate 10. Crews are also preparing to begin similar work on Stirrup Road in the coming days.

Transportation officials are urging drivers to use caution in active work zones, where speed limits have been reduced to 35 mph. Motorists are also asked to follow directions from pilot car operators guiding traffic through construction areas.

Chip sealing is a preventive roadway treatment that involves applying a layer of asphalt emulsion followed by aggregate chips to the road surface. The process helps protect pavement from weather-related damage, improves driving conditions, and extends the lifespan of existing roadways.
