Katherine Legge’s Indy 500 Bid Ends Early After Crash

Katherine Legge’s ambitious attempt to race 1,100 miles in a single day came to an abrupt halt during the Indianapolis 500. The 45-year-old British driver, who was making history as the first woman, the oldest person, and the first non-American to attempt the Indy 500-Coke 600 double, crashed out on lap 18. The incident occurred as she tried to avoid a collision with Ryan Hunter-Reay, who spun in front of her. Although Legge managed to swerve left and miss Hunter-Reay, she lost control of her vehicle, resulting in terminal damage.

Legge had planned to complete the 500 miles at Indianapolis before heading to Charlotte for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. Despite the setback, she will still join the select group of drivers who have started both races on the same day, as she is set to participate in the Coke 600 later in the evening. This marks her first start in the Coke 600, where she will be driving the No. 78 Chevy for Live Fast Motorsports, starting from the 37th position.

While Legge’s attempt at the double did not go as planned, she joins a notable list of drivers who have pursued this challenging feat. Kyle Larson, who attempted the double in 2024 and 2025, faced similar challenges, including a delay that prevented him from reaching Charlotte in time in 2024 and an early crash in the Indy 500 in 2025. Other drivers who have attempted the double include John Andretti, Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, Kurt Busch, and Larson again in 2025.

This was Legge’s fifth attempt at the Indianapolis 500, with her best finish being 22nd place in 2012. Despite the early exit, her participation in both races on the same day is a testament to her determination and skill as a driver.
