An Indianapolis DoorDash driver, Robert Gault, who is also an Army veteran, is recovering after being shot in the head during an attempted carjacking early Thursday morning on the city’s north side. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex off Portland Square.
Details of the Incident
Gault had just completed his last delivery for the night when two individuals approached him and attempted to steal his car. The suspects, unable to drive his manual-transmission vehicle, shot Gault in the face. Fortunately, the bullet missed any vital areas. Gault, who served in Iraq without injury, expressed disbelief at being shot back home.
Gault believes the suspects used a vacant apartment to lure him to the location. After being shot, he managed to run for help. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is investigating the case, but no arrests have been made yet.
Community and Corporate Response
DoorDash has condemned the attack as “unacceptable” and is cooperating with the police investigation. The company highlighted its in-app safety features, including 24/7 support and an emergency button, to assist drivers in dangerous situations.
Gault has indicated that he may stop delivering unless he is armed in the future. He also advised other drivers to keep moving if they find themselves in similar situations. The IMPD is urging anyone with information or security footage to contact them or CrimeStoppers.
