The city of Fort Worth and the Tarrant Regional Water District hosted a meeting on June 3 to provide public awareness of updates to the form-based codes that will guide all new development on Panther Island. Nearly 50 interested citizens attended the meeting at Rose Marine Theater.
Guideline Updates
Mayor Pro Tem Carlos Flores credited public feedback as the catalyst for the changes. The updates resulted in what is now called Panther Island Vision 2.0, which includes key priorities such as a robust open space network, continuous waterfront and canal access, smaller blocks with walkable streets, preservation of view corridors, and development density concentrated in the center of the island.
Susan Alanis, Panther Island program director for TRWD, provided context by summarizing the flood control portion of the project that effectively creates the island. The primary effort is the creation of a Trinity River bypass channel that will flow under the recently constructed Henderson Street and Westside Drive bridges.
Assistant City Manager Dana Burghdoff provided insight into key updates to the form-based codes that will operationalize Panther Island Vision 2.0. The first major Panther Island development project is in the planning stages, with Austin-based Seco Ventures proposing to build a $100 million, 12-story, 250-unit apartment complex.
