A significant fire broke out at a recycling plant in the South Valley, prompting a health alert due to the smoke it generated. The Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) personnel, along with Albuquerque Fire Rescue, are actively working to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
Details of the Incident
The fire was reported around 6:30 p.m. at the plant located off Broadway Boulevard, just south of Rio Bravo Boulevard. As a result, Broadway is closed in both directions in the affected area. The initial flames consumed paper materials, but have since spread to aluminum and other recycled items.
BCFR spokesperson William Harris stated that the cause of the fire remains unknown. Despite the intensity of the fire, the 50 firefighters and 19 units on the scene have managed to surround it, reducing the likelihood of further spread.
Health Alert Issued
The Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Quality Program has issued a health alert due to the smoke, which is currently blowing away from residential areas. However, residents in the potential path of the smoke are advised to shelter in place, close windows, and turn off HVAC systems to minimize exposure to harmful black smoke. The alert is in effect from 9:35 p.m. and will remain until 9 a.m. the following day.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported among firefighters or plant workers. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
