Federal Subpoenas Issued Over Cuba Trips by Activists Piker and Benjamin

Federal authorities have issued subpoenas to political influencer Hasan Piker and CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin as part of an investigation into potential violations of U.S. sanctions related to their trips to Cuba. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is seeking information on financial and logistical aspects of these trips, which were part of the ‘Nuestra América Convoy,’ a group known for supporting Cuba’s communist regime.

Concerns Over Foreign Influence

This investigation is part of a broader effort by U.S. officials to address foreign influence operations that may affect American political discourse and national security. The scrutiny is particularly focused on activities that could support political violence or extremist movements. The investigation involves several U.S. organizations and leaders, including those linked to the Democratic Socialists of America, which promotes Piker as a prominent member.

According to reports, the convoy included 650 delegates from 33 countries and 120 organizations, with financial backing from figures like Neville Roy Singham, who has been known to support pro-China and pro-Cuba narratives. Singham’s financial contributions to groups like CodePink have raised questions about the influence of foreign actors on U.S. soil.

Legal and Political Implications

The subpoenas represent a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s actions against far-left activist networks that have historically supported communist regimes. These networks often present their activities as humanitarian aid or anti-war efforts, but federal authorities are examining whether these actions comply with U.S. sanctions laws.

U.S. law, through the Cuban Asset Control Regulations, imposes strict restrictions on financial transactions with Cuba, generally prohibiting unlicensed travel-related transactions and the export of goods or services to the island. Exceptions exist for journalism, humanitarian projects, and educational programs, but the current investigation seeks to determine if these exceptions were exceeded.

Both Piker and Benjamin have been vocal in their criticism of U.S. policies, with Piker recently dismissing the Justice Department’s indictment of Cuban leader Raúl Castro as a baseless move by the Trump administration. The broader investigation also includes other activists and organizations, with additional subpoenas anticipated as the inquiry progresses.
