Family Seeks Justice in Johnson County Jail Death

A devastating cell block altercation at the Johnson County Jail in Franklin, Indiana, resulted in the death of 35-year-old Russell D. Blackwell II. Blackwell’s family is now seeking justice, claiming severe guard negligence and demanding that the state upgrade the charges against the fellow inmate, Christian Howard, to murder.

Investigation and Charges

According to a probable cause affidavit, jail employees conducted a welfare check on May 21, 2026, after an inmate tried to contact staff. Upon entering the cell, jailers reportedly witnessed Howard repeatedly striking Blackwell. Surveillance footage shows Howard punching Blackwell more than 15 times with closed fists before kicking and stomping him on the ground.

Blackwell was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he died later that evening from blunt force trauma throughout his body. The prosecutor’s office stated that the voluntary manslaughter charge applies because the crime was committed in the heat of passion without cool, deliberate reflection. However, Blackwell’s family rejects this characterization, arguing that Howard’s statements to investigators prove premeditation.

Family’s Concerns and Demands

Amanda, the mother of Blackwell’s daughter, is handling the legal aftermath for his estate. She claims that the jail neglected Blackwell’s cries for help and questions the official timeline of events. Amanda also raised concerns about jail classification policies, wondering why Blackwell, who was held on a $2,000 bond stemming from a misdemeanor domestic dispute, was paired in a cell with a convicted felon.

The family has established a GoFundMe page to cover immediate funeral expenses and vows to be present at every court date to ensure full justice is served. Amanda wants to clear Blackwell’s name, as mistaken identity on social media led to confusion with a convicted sex offender sharing a similar name.
