Wyoming residents and visitors have a unique opportunity this summer to engage with history while staying active, thanks to the Wyoming State Parks’ celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The initiative invites participants to virtually hike the Wyoming stretch of the historic Oregon Trail using the Pacer app.
Virtual Hiking Experience
The Pacer app offers a two-part virtual hike along the Oregon Trail. Participants can choose between the trail from Fort Laramie to Independence Rock or from South Pass to Fort Bridger. The app connects with various fitness devices like FitBit, Apple Watch, and Garmin, or allows manual step entry, to track your progress along the trail.
As you log your steps, the app unlocks photos and historical information about significant locations along the trail. This interactive experience not only encourages physical activity but also educates participants about the trail’s role in shaping the western United States.
Community Involvement
The program runs until September 30, 2026, and is open to everyone in Wyoming. Local organizations such as the Casper Recreation Center and UW Extension Wyoming Walks are hosting walks throughout the summer to help participants accumulate steps. This initiative not only promotes health and wellness but also has the potential to boost tourism, as participants may be inspired to visit the historical sites they explore virtually.
Getting Involved
To join this educational and health-focused adventure, interested individuals can download the Pacer app and start their journey along the Oregon Trail. This program offers a fun and informative way to celebrate the nation’s history while enjoying the natural beauty of Wyoming.
