EL PASO, Texas — Two new solar canopy projects opened at El Paso International Airport on Wednesday. The structures add solar panels above parts of the airport and aim to lower energy costs.

The canopies sit over sections of the airport’s parking and related infrastructure. They give shade to vehicles and passengers. City officials said the panels will also produce electricity for airport use.

The City of El Paso said the canopies will help cut power bills. “It’s going to reduce the cost of the electricity cost at the airport by 22 percent,”

Officials said the project is part of efforts to modernize airport facilities and manage operating expenses. The canopies combine practical benefits like shade with the goal of reducing reliance on grid power.

Airport leaders will monitor the systems as they begin operation. They plan to measure energy output and savings over the coming months.

The new canopies mark a visible step toward using solar technology at the airport. City officials say the move could inform future projects that aim to lower costs and improve infrastructure at other public sites.
