The Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Friday night after star player Ketel Marte failed to use the Automated Ball/Strike system to challenge a called strike three for the final out.
Television replays showed that the 100 mph sinker from Riley O’Brien was high and out of the strike zone. The D-backs still had both of their ABS challenges remaining.
Marte said through an interpreter that he was looking for a breaking ball and was surprised by the two-seamer. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said he hadn’t talked to Marte about the gaffe and would address it with him on Saturday.
The loss ended the D-backs’ four-game winning streak. The team had plenty of other mistakes, including a pinch runner being picked off in the ninth inning.
