Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu has once again captured the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with his latest film, ‘Fjord.’ This marks Mungiu’s second time winning the top prize, having first won in 2007 with ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.’
‘Fjord,’ set in Norway, delves into the cultural and familial tensions that arise when a Romanian IT specialist, played by Sebastian Stan, relocates his family to his wife’s native village. The film addresses the challenges of navigating differing child-rearing practices, which escalate when child-protection services intervene, highlighting the broader conflict between conservative and progressive values.
Jury president Park Chan-wook commended the film for its artistic approach to fostering understanding among differing viewpoints. Mungiu emphasized the importance of tolerance and empathy, urging audiences to reconsider their beliefs and remain open to diverse perspectives.
Other Highlights from Cannes
In addition to Mungiu’s win, the festival featured several notable moments. Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, who accepted the Grand Prix for ‘Minotaur,’ used the platform to call for an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the best actress award was shared by Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto for their roles in ‘All of a Sudden,’ a film exploring elder care.
The best actor prize was awarded jointly to Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia for their performances in ‘Coward,’ a Belgian film about World War One soldiers. The best director accolade was shared between Pawel Pawlikowski for ‘Fatherland’ and the Spanish duo Los Javis for ‘The Black Ball.’
Barbra Streisand received an honorary Palme d’Or, accepted on her behalf by Isabelle Huppert, due to Streisand’s absence from the ceremony. Streisand, in a video message, highlighted cinema’s power to unite people across divides.
