Wylie East pitcher Levi Scroggin allowed two runs over seven innings with five strikeouts in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Wylie.
Wylie East rallied late to beat Wylie 3-2 at Pirate Field. Carter Covington drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning double. The win moved Wylie East to 16-10 overall and 12-3 in district. Wylie fell to 19-11 overall and 12-3 in district.
“Very competitive game for both teams,” Wylie East head coach Heath Andrews said. “Each pitcher gave their team a chance. We just had a few more things go our way.”
Wylie took an early lead in the first. Noah Smith doubled and Cooper Watts drew a walk. After Aiden Beck was hit by a pitch, Smith scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Wylie left several runners on base and could not add to the lead.
The third inning swung momentum. Parker Brunson reached and stole second. Brandon Johnson bunted for a single, then stole second to put runners in position. Lukas Harold laid down another bunt that allowed Brunson to score and tie the game at 1-1. Wylie answered in the bottom half when Chase Martin hit an RBI double to make it 2-1. Brunson then helped turn a key defensive play to end the inning.
“Heads-up play from Brunson and Garcia,” Andrews said. “They have made plays like that all season. They work so well together and have a great feel for what the other is doing or wanting to do. It is a real asset having them in the middle. I think the energy is always there for that game but really gives a momentum and confidence shift.”
The Raiders tied the score in the fifth on a wild pitch. Pitching took over after that. Wylie East’s Levi Scroggin went the distance and allowed two runs with five strikeouts. Wylie’s Chase Martin struck out seven and gave up one earned run in six innings.
With the game tied in the seventh, Covington ripped a double to plate the go-ahead run and put Wylie East up 3-2. “Carter has been clutch for us several times this year,” Andrews said. “In moments like that when I see Carter coming up, it is a good feeling.” Wylie had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh but Wylie East’s defense ended the game on a fly out to seal the win.
