Cleveland School District Faces Challenges Amid School Mergers

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) is navigating a complex transition following its decision to consolidate 39 schools, resulting in the closure of 18 buildings. This move has led to the layoff of nearly 400 educators and staff, sparking concerns and questions within the community.

Impact on Staff and Class Sizes

The layoffs, governed by the union contract, have affected teachers, aides, counselors, and nurses. The contract stipulates that layoffs are based on seniority, evaluation scores, and licensing, which has led to some unexpected cuts, such as the elimination of all college and career coordinators before any teachers were laid off.

Despite these challenges, CMSD aims to maintain class sizes within the limits set by the union contract: 20 students for pre-K, 25 for kindergarten to third grade, 28 for fourth to eighth grade, and 30 for high school. Currently, most classes are within these limits, with an average high school class size of 17.7 students.

Educational Opportunities and Administrative Changes

CMSD is committed to offering college-level classes at all high schools, a significant goal of the merger plan. Additionally, the district plans to ensure a minimum of two teachers per grade at every K-8 school, contingent on enrollment figures.

On the administrative side, CMSD has laid off 86 administrators to align with peer districts, following a state audit that highlighted an excess of administrative staff. Despite these layoffs, questions remain about the distribution of salaries and the roles of those affected.

Future Uncertainties

As CMSD prepares for the next academic year, uncertainty looms over student enrollment. While 66% of students from closing schools have chosen new schools, the remaining 34% were assigned spots at merging schools, leaving their attendance in question.

The district continues to work closely with the Cleveland Teachers Union to address these challenges and ensure a smooth transition for students and staff alike.
