Brookland Police Urge Sober Rides for Fourth of July

Brookland police and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are reminding drivers to plan for a sober ride before celebrating the Fourth of July.

Impaired Driving Prevention

The message is part of NHTSA’s “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving” campaign, aimed at reducing impaired driving during one of the deadliest holiday periods on the nation’s roads.

According to NHTSA, 579 people were killed in traffic crashes during the 2024 Fourth of July holiday period. From 2020 to 2024, there were 2,719 total traffic fatalities during the holiday period, including 1,724 driver fatalities. NHTSA said 38% of those drivers were drunk.

“Impaired driving is never acceptable,” Brookland Police Chief Moore said. “For some people, even one drink is too many to drive safely. While everyone is making plans with friends and family for Fourth of July festivities, it is crucial to also make plans for a sober ride home and completely rule out drinking and driving.”

Moore said Brookland police are partnering with NHTSA to remind drivers that “Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.”

“Celebrating our nation’s independence safely is our biggest responsibility,” Moore said.

Authorities urge anyone who plans to drink during an Independence Day celebration to arrange a sober ride before the event begins, whether through a designated driver, taxi or rideshare service. Drivers who become impaired should give their keys to a sober person who can help them get home safely.

Police also encourage people to intervene if a friend who has been drinking is considering driving. Anyone who spots a suspected drunk driver should contact local law enforcement.
