Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have announced a proposal for major flood-prevention projects to protect the city from the dangers of higher sea levels. The projects, which would include new flood walls and levees, would revamp 16 miles of the city’s coastline and close off 20 paths for floodwaters to enter Boston neighborhoods.
Cost and Benefits
The proposed projects would cost roughly $9-10 billion, but are expected to save about $41 billion in future damages. By working together on the Boston Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study, the city and other local stakeholders would pay just 35% of the projects’ cost, with the federal government picking up the rest of the cost of the baseline infrastructure.
