Belle Isle Traffic and Cycling Enhancements Set for Completion

Belle Isle Park, a cherished recreational area in Detroit, is on the brink of significant enhancements aimed at improving traffic flow and cycling safety. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that these changes, part of the Belle Isle Park Multimodal Mobility Study, will be completed by the end of next week, weather permitting.

Enhancing Traffic Flow

Detroit residents and park visitors have long expressed concerns over traffic congestion and safety on Belle Isle. The park has witnessed incidents of speeding, distracted driving, and crashes, including a tragic hit-and-run accident in recent years. In response, the DNR has initiated changes to streamline traffic and enhance safety for all park users.

Central Avenue, a key thoroughfare on the island, will transition to two-way vehicular traffic from Picnic Way to Portage Way. This change aims to alleviate congestion, particularly near the beach area, which has been a focal point of traffic-related safety concerns. Additionally, the scenic route through the island’s wet mesic flatwoods will shift from one-way eastbound to one-way westbound traffic, further optimizing traffic flow.

New Cycling Track

A new two-way cycling track is set to encircle the 982-acre island, providing a dedicated space for cyclists. This track is part of the DNR’s efforts to promote multimodal mobility and recreation opportunities within the park. The MacArthur Bridge entry and exit points will feature high-visibility road markings and signage to guide both cyclists and drivers safely through crossings.

Amanda Treadwell, urban area field planner for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division, emphasized the importance of these improvements. “Providing additional westbound traffic from the east end of the park will support reducing traffic congestion on Riverbank, particularly at the beach area,” she stated. The new cycle lane will encourage high-speed cyclists to use the designated track, allowing walkers and casual riders to enjoy the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Trail at their own pace.

Future Improvements

The transition to the new traffic patterns will occur in stages, with all work being weather-dependent. Visitors can check Michigan.gov/DNRClosures for anticipated closure dates and additional information. Later this summer, the park will also see new directional and facility signage to further enhance visitor experience and connectivity.

These projects reflect a broader commitment to improving the visitor experience at Belle Isle, inviting parkgoers to explore the area in a variety of modes. The enhancements are expected to support complementary programming and increase the park’s accessibility and safety for all.
