Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Lakeway, Texas, has announced it will end its labor and delivery services on June 28. The decision comes as the hospital responds to demographic changes in the area, particularly the growth of the population aged 65 and older. The 106-bed facility, which currently delivers approximately 33 babies per month, will shift its focus to other areas of care.

Transition of Services

Patients receiving prenatal care at the Lakeway facility have several options for continuing their care. They can transfer to another Baylor Scott & White location, follow their physician if they are relocating, or choose another hospital in the area. Baylor Scott & White will continue to offer obstetric services at its Round Rock and Marble Falls medical centers, which include a Level III neonatal intensive care unit.

Within a 20-mile radius of Lakeway, other hospital systems such as St. David’s HealthCare and Ascension Seton will continue to provide labor and delivery services. The Lakeway campus will maintain its gynecology care offerings, including well-woman visits and other women’s health services.

Baylor Scott & White Health emphasized its commitment to the Lakeway community, stating that the decision followed a careful review of community health needs and anticipated changes in obstetric care. The hospital plans to repurpose the space previously used for labor and delivery to support other areas of care, ensuring that the facility continues to meet the evolving needs of the community.

This change marks a shift from 2020 when Baylor Scott & White consolidated labor and delivery services from its Marble Falls location to Lakeway to enhance quality care. The hospital had six labor and delivery rooms and 18 postpartum beds at that time.
