Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be jailed if she returns from self-imposed exile in India, according to a senior official. Hasina faces a death sentence in Bangladesh and her party is banned following a popular uprising against her long rule in 2024.
Hasina has been living in New Delhi since August 2024 and has denied the charges from exile. Bangladesh’s state minister for foreign affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, stated that Hasina is a convicted criminal and will be taken into custody upon her return.
Hasina’s recent statement about returning to Bangladesh voluntarily was seen as an attempt to mobilize fugitive party leaders and activists. Bangladesh has asked India to extradite Hasina, and New Delhi is examining the request.
