Albuquerque man charged with murder after San Mateo road-rage shooting

Albuquerque police arrested a 31-year-old man they say killed a 19-year-old driver in a road-rage shooting on San Mateo.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque police arrested a 31-year-old man they say killed a 19-year-old driver in a road-rage shooting on San Mateo.

Police said homicide detectives charged Cecilio Lopez in the death of Roman Valenciano. Officers said Valenciano was driving to pick up his mother after work when he was shot.

According to police, surveillance video showed a silver Ford Mustang make a U-turn near San Mateo Boulevard and Phoenix Road at 1:45 p.m. and turn into the path of Valenciano’s gray Nissan Sentra.

Police said the Mustang brake-checked the Nissan and stopped in the road. Detectives said Lopez then pulled alongside the Nissan near 1425 San Mateo Boulevard and shot at 1:48 p.m., matching a ShotSpotter alert.

Police said officers got a description of the Mustang, then saw a car that matched it return to the area. Investigators used license-plate readers to track it down and learned Lopez was on probation for a previous felony conviction.

Police said investigators also used information from Lopez’s cell phone to confirm he was driving on San Mateo at the time of the shooting. They said he returned to the scene three times before driving to a North Valley home where he had been staying.

Detectives got search and arrest warrants and arrested Lopez that evening at the North Valley home, police said. They said Lopez took his Mustang to an unknown shop and painted it black after the homicide.

Police charged Lopez with an open count of murder, tampering with evidence, shooting at or from a motor vehicle resulting in death and felon in possession of a firearm.
