Benton County Roads Flooded

Heavy rainfall caused flooding on multiple roads across Benton County on Thursday, forcing crews to close several roadways as water covered low-lying areas.

Flooding a Recurring Challenge

Residents and county officials say flooding remains a recurring challenge in some areas as heavy rain impacts roadways. Gooseberry Road was among 10 roads impacted by flooding, according to county officials.

For residents who live along the road, flooding is a familiar problem. Cory Petrick, who lives near Gooseberry Road, said heavy rain regularly creates travel challenges for residents in the area.

County officials said they have completed several hazard mitigation projects in flood-prone areas to help reduce the impact of future flooding events. Melody Kwok said the county will continue seeking grant funding for additional infrastructure improvements.

Officials also warned drivers about the dangers of entering flooded roadways. Kwok said as little as 12 to 18 inches of moving water can lift a vehicle off the ground and carry it away.

County officials recommend keeping an emergency kit stocked with items such as flashlights, snacks and other essentials during severe weather events. Drivers are encouraged to check local road conditions before traveling and monitor the Benton County road closure map or IDrive Arkansas for the latest updates.
