DOJ Clarifies Vote Count in Los Angeles Mayoral Race Amid Social Media Claims

The Justice Department has clarified a claim circulating on social media regarding the vote count in the recent Los Angeles mayoral race. The claim suggested that Republican candidate Spencer Pratt received zero new votes during an election night update, a notion that gained traction on social media platforms, including from notable figures like Elon Musk.

DOJ’s Response

First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli, appointed by former President Trump, addressed these claims, stating, “We reviewed official county records. The claim is false. Each candidate received votes in every update.” This statement comes amidst ongoing discussions about election integrity, a topic that has been prominent since the 2020 presidential election.

Pratt, known for his previous career in reality television, was competing against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman in the nonpartisan primary election. While CNN has projected Bass to advance to the November general election, it remains unclear whether Pratt or Raman will join her as votes continue to be counted.

Vote Count Clarification

The Associated Press, responsible for publishing real-time vote counts, explained that a delay in automated updates caused Pratt’s votes to appear as zero initially. “Exactly one minute later, the electronic update picked up the votes for another group of candidates including Spencer Pratt,” an AP spokesperson clarified. In total, Pratt received 21,870 votes, Bass 12,850, and Raman 9,521 in that update.

This incident highlights the challenges and complexities of modern vote counting, especially in states like California, where mail-in ballots can be received up to seven days post-election, provided they are postmarked by Election Day. Such ballots are typically verified before being counted, often leading to a delay in final results.

Ongoing Election Integrity Discussions

The situation in Los Angeles is part of a broader national conversation about election processes and integrity. Former President Trump has continued to voice concerns about election fraud, particularly focusing on the pace of vote counting and alleging potential misconduct without evidence. The Justice Department has been actively involved in ensuring transparency and accuracy in the election process, sending observers to oversee ballot processing in Los Angeles.

As the nation continues to navigate these discussions, the importance of accurate and transparent election processes remains a priority for both officials and the public.
