Roots and Ramen at Frisco’s Most Underrated Thai Table

People drive past this place a dozen times before they go in. It sits in a strip mall off Preston Road, sandwiched between a nail salon and a cell phone repair shop, and nothing about the exterior suggests you should stop. That assumption costs people.

Thai Chili 2 Go has been in Frisco long enough to have regulars who show up every week without looking at the menu. The name does them no favors — it sounds like a fast-food counter, and the room itself is small, maybe fifteen tables, nothing decorative to speak of. First-timers usually scan the place and wonder if they made a wrong turn. They haven’t.

What comes out of that kitchen is careful Thai cooking. Not the kind calibrated to suburban comfort, not excessively sweet or blunted for a crowd that might push back on heat. The pad see ew here has actual wok char on the noodles, which matters more than most people realize until they taste the difference. The drunken noodles carry real heat if you ask for it — and you should ask, because the default is mild and the dish is better with some fire under it.

The tom kha soup is the thing that earns repeat visits for a lot of people. It arrives in a clay pot, pale and fragrant with galangal and lemongrass, coconut milk pooling around mushrooms and chicken. It is not a dramatic dish. It doesn’t need to be. The balance is just right — sour, rich, faintly herbal — and a bowl of it on a cold January evening is a good reason to live in Frisco.

Green curry, red curry, Panang curry — they’re all solid. The Panang is probably the most consistent, thick and slightly sweet with makrut lime leaf cut through it. Order it with tofu if you want; the protein doesn’t particularly change what makes it work.

Lunch is the smart move. The weekday lunch specials run around nine to twelve dollars and come with a choice of protein, a small salad, and a cup of soup. It is a reasonable amount of food and a genuinely good deal for the area, where lunch at any sit-down spot rarely comes in under fifteen. Dinner is busier, and on weekend evenings you may wait a few minutes for a table even though the room is small — that tells you something.

Service is straightforward. No hovering, no upselling, quick refills on the Thai iced tea, which is worth ordering. They’re not trying to be your favorite restaurant experience. They’re trying to get you fed well, and they do.

The takeout operation is efficient if you go that route, but eating in gives you the soup while it’s still properly hot. Parking is easy, which in Frisco is never guaranteed near anything worth eating.

If you’ve been defaulting to the bigger Thai chains along the tollway, this place is worth the detour. It won’t look like much when you pull in. Order the tom kha, get the drunken noodles with the heat turned up, and recalibrate.
