Utes Tailgate Turns Breakfast into Tradition with Red-Bearded Fan

Salt Lake City – On a crisp fall Saturday, University of Utah fans filled the campus tailgating lot with music, cheers and a breakfast‑style spread as they prepared for the 104th showdown against longtime rivals the BYU Cougars. Families arrived early, bringing blankets, umbrellas and a sense of community that underscored the importance of the rivalry beyond the final score.

Breakfast replaces the usual grill

Because the game started early, fans swapped the typical burgers and barbecue for bacon, eggs and breakfast burritos. “It’s a great time,” said Kjeresty Thomas, who attended with her family. “The vibe is crazy – we’re having a great time.” The morning air was clear, the sun bright, and the atmosphere was unmistakably festive.

Red beard tradition

Among the crowd was Bryan Roberts, a 30‑year veteran of the University of Utah’s facilities department. Roberts promised his daughter that if he ever retired, he would dye his beard red. He kept that promise, and his crimson beard has become a beloved part of his game‑day look. “I told my daughter if I get my retirement out of there, I’m going to dye my beard red,” Roberts said, smiling.

Roberts also helped construct the iconic Block U that has stood on campus for the past decade. “It’s the U’s legacy, and also part of my legacy,” he explained. “I built that because I love the U and it’s something everybody can enjoy.” He shared a favorite photo of the project, reminding fans of the lasting symbols that unite the community.

Fans from both sides mingle

While the Utes dominated the tailgate, BYU supporters also made their presence known. A group of Masons traveled from Lehi, joking that “everybody loves you” when you wear all blue. They predicted a Cougars victory, while many Utes fans were confident their team would prevail.

Andrew Valdez, one of the few BYU fans in a sea of red, said he felt welcomed. “I’m different from the other Cougar fans, but I love my team. I love blue and that’s all I’m about,” he said. His enthusiasm highlighted the friendly rivalry that defines the weekend.

Tradition, family and community

From red beards to breakfast burritos, the tailgate showcased generations of fans gathering to celebrate a shared love of football and community. For many, the event is as much about family traditions, friendships and memories as it is about the scoreboard.

The Utes‑BYU rivalry continues to be a cornerstone of Utah’s football culture, drawing crowds that span ages, backgrounds and hometowns. As the teams prepare to clash on the field, the tailgate serves as a reminder that the spirit of competition can bring neighbors together in a celebration of local pride.
