Mark Dorazio stands as San Antonio’s sole Republican in a newly Democratic Texas House delegation

Republican state Rep. Mark Dorazio (R‑San Antonio) is set to be the lone GOP voice from Bexar County in the Texas House after the recent election shifted the delegation firmly into Democratic control. Dorazio, a longtime member of the conservative wing that helped replace former House Speaker Joe Straus, has long advocated for Republicans to chair all committees and for limiting Democratic influence in the legislative process.

Election results reshape San Antonio’s delegation

When the Texas House reconvenes in January, Dorazio will be the only Republican among the ten‑member delegation from Bexar County. The shift follows a “blue wave” that swept many suburban Republicans out of office on Tuesday. In Dorazio’s own District 122, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Gina Hinojosa carried the district with 52.7% of the vote, according to local political analyst Bert Santibañez. Voters also backed Democrat Ron Nirenberg in the race for Bexar County Judge.

Despite the Democratic surge, Dorazio held on to a narrow lead over little‑known challenger Shelly Nickels, winning by roughly 1,800 votes after the Associated Press called the race. The two other San Antonio Republicans, Rep. Marc LaHood and Rep. John Lujan, were already out of the House. Lujan pursued an unsuccessful bid for Congress, while LaHood lost his Northside seat to Democrat Zack Dunn – the first Democrat to win District 121 since 1981 – with a 54‑46% margin, a 13‑point swing from his 2022 victory.

Funding and campaign support

Republican leaders and political action committees poured significant resources into the San Antonio races, spending roughly $1.25 million on LaHood’s contest and more than $500,000 to aid Dorazio. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows visited San Antonio to campaign for the GOP candidates, underscoring the party’s effort to retain a foothold in the region.

In contrast, Texas Democrats fielded candidates for every office on the ballot, aiming to capitalize on the statewide blue wave. Texas Majority PAC Executive Director Katherine Fischer noted that the party ran out of time and resources to support every race, though she expressed satisfaction with the overall results.

Implications for the Texas House

With Democrats expecting to claim at least 20 seats in the chamber, the long‑dominant Republican majority could shrink from 26 seats to a 14‑seat minority. The new balance of power will likely reshape committee assignments and legislative priorities, especially on issues where Dorazio has been a vocal advocate, such as limiting Democratic committee chairs and promoting conservative policy agendas.

Neither Dorazio nor Nickels have publicly commented on the closeness of the race as of Thursday evening. Nickels, a health‑care executive who ran a low‑visibility campaign, spent just $5,600 in the final month, highlighting the stark contrast in campaign financing between the two parties.

Looking ahead

As the Texas House prepares for its upcoming session, Dorazio’s solitary Republican presence from San Antonio will place him in a pivotal role for the GOP caucus. His ability to influence legislation will depend on coalition‑building with fellow Republicans across the state and navigating a Democratic‑controlled chamber.

Local constituents and community leaders will be watching closely to see how Dorazio balances his conservative principles with the practical realities of a dramatically altered legislative landscape.
