Raynham Police and Fire Departments Merge Dispatch Centers to Boost Emergency Response

Raynham, Mass. – In a move aimed at strengthening public‑safety coordination, the Raynham Police Department and Raynham Fire Department officially merged their emergency dispatch centers on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8 a.m. The new joint dispatch hub operates from the police department headquarters and is staffed by a single team of trained communicators who now field police, fire and emergency medical service (EMS) calls 24/7.

Why the change matters for residents

Police Chief David LaPlante explained that a unified dispatch center enables operators to share information instantly, reducing the time it takes to route the appropriate resources to an incident. “When a call comes in, our dispatchers can see the full picture—whether it’s a police matter, a fire, or a medical emergency—and they can coordinate the response without the delay of transferring between separate units,” LaPlante said.

Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita added that the consolidation also frees a firefighter who previously served as a dedicated dispatcher to return to frontline duties. “That extra hands‑on‑deck means we can respond to more calls faster, which directly benefits the safety of our community,” LaCivita noted.

Operational details and staffing

The police department hired two full‑time communication clerks to support the transition, ensuring that the increased call volume is managed efficiently. Both police and fire dispatchers completed joint training sessions prior to the launch, learning each other’s protocols and communication procedures. This cross‑training is intended to create a seamless workflow and eliminate any gaps that could arise from the previous separate systems.

Community impact

Raynham residents can expect quicker response times and more accurate information during emergencies. By centralizing the dispatch function, the town reduces the likelihood of miscommunication and duplicate dispatches, which historically could cause delays. The town’s leadership highlighted that the change aligns with broader efforts to modernize public‑safety services while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Mayor Michael O’Connor praised the collaboration, stating, “Our police and fire professionals have worked together for years on the ground; now they’re doing the same behind the scenes to protect our families and neighborhoods more effectively.” The mayor also emphasized that the consolidation was achieved without raising taxes, reflecting the town’s commitment to prudent budgeting.

Looking ahead

The combined dispatch center will continue to monitor performance metrics, such as average call‑answer time and response intervals, to assess the benefits of the integration. Both departments have pledged to keep the community informed about any adjustments or enhancements that arise from the data.

Raynham’s approach mirrors a growing trend among municipalities seeking to streamline emergency services while preserving the high standards of safety that residents expect. As the town settles into the new system, officials remain confident that the unified dispatch will serve as a model for neighboring communities looking to improve their own public‑safety operations.
