Rudy Reyes Has Cooked Tamales Here for Twenty Years

El Rancho Supermercado on South Collins Street is a full-scale Mexican grocery, and it has been feeding Arlington’s west-side neighborhoods longer than most of its current customers have lived here.

Rudy Reyes started working the deli counter at the Collins location not long after it opened. He’s been there, most days, since. Ask him what to get and he’ll give you a straight answer without the sales pitch. On a Tuesday in late October, he pointed two college kids toward the tamales without hesitation. “We make them in-house,” he said, then turned back to the cutting board. That was the whole pitch.

The tamales hold up. Pork or rajas con queso, wrapped tight, masa that doesn’t crumble. They sell them individually for a dollar or two, or by the dozen if you’re planning ahead. The red pork is the one to start with — straightforward, well-seasoned, not trying too hard. During the holidays, the line at the tamal counter runs down the aisle and the staff works through it without drama.

The deli itself covers a lot of ground. Barbacoa on weekends, carnitas, chicharrón by the pound, freshly made flour tortillas that come off the press and hit a small paper bag before they’ve fully cooled. Agua frescas in large styrofoam cups, horchata or jamaica depending on the day’s prep. The prepared food section shifts with the week — sometimes pozole, sometimes menudo, sometimes a tray of rice and beans that sells out before noon.

Past the deli, El Rancho is a real grocery store: bulk dried chiles, every cut of beef and pork you’d want for carne asada or birria, fresh nopales, an entire aisle of Mexican candy and snack foods, pan dulce in the bakery section that gets restocked by mid-morning. The produce section runs wide and cheap. If you’ve been cooking from a recipe that calls for something like guajillo or ancho and your regular grocery doesn’t stock it, this is where the problem gets solved.

The store draws a neighborhood crowd — families with carts full, guys picking up lunch from the deli, older women who clearly know exactly what they came for. The aisles aren’t fancy. The floors are clean but not polished. Nobody’s playing ambient music. It functions like what it is: a working grocery store that happens to have one of the better tamal operations in Tarrant County.

Parking in the lot off Collins is usually fine on weekday mornings and chaotic on Saturday afternoons. Go early if you want the best deli selection. The tamales go fast on weekends, and Rudy’s not in the business of holding them for anyone who didn’t show up in time.

Pricing is straightforward — most prepared items run between $1.50 and $8, the grocery side is competitive with any discount chain in the area. There’s no loyalty app, no QR code menu, no seasonal cocktail. Just a deli counter that does what it says it does, run by someone who’s been doing it long enough to know exactly what that takes.
