Auld Shebeen Pours a Proper Pint on Quaker Lane

Auld Shebeen has been operating at the same address on Quaker Lane since 1996 — which makes it one of the longer-running Irish pubs in Northern Virginia, a region that has seen no shortage of them open and close. That kind of tenure doesn’t happen by accident.

The pub sits in a strip mall at 3971 Chain Bridge Road in the Fairfax portion of the region, but Alexandria regulars — particularly those coming up from Seminary Road or over from the Beverley Hills neighborhood — have been claiming it as a local for years. It’s close enough to the city line that splitting hairs about jurisdiction feels beside the point.

Inside, it looks more or less the way a pub should: low light, dark wood, mismatched chairs, a bar that runs most of the length of the room, and a back section that opens up into something closer to a dining room without losing the pub feel. There are flags, old photographs, some hurling jerseys. Nothing has been designed to look authentic — it just is, which is a different thing entirely.

The beer list leans predictably Irish — Guinness, Harp, Smithwick’s on draft — but they carry a solid enough range of American craft options if you want them. A properly poured Guinness here takes the full two minutes. If that detail matters to you, you’ll be satisfied. Pints run around $7–$9 depending on what you order.

The food is worth taking seriously. The shepherd’s pie is a reliable order — substantial, properly seasoned, not the watered-down version some pubs pass off as comfort food. The fish and chips are good: the batter crisps up without being greasy, and the portion is honest. On weekends they run a brunch, and the Irish breakfast — eggs, rashers, black and white pudding, grilled tomato, brown bread — is one of the better versions you’ll find this side of Dulles. Plan on spending $12–$18 for a full meal.

Wednesday nights there’s a traditional Irish session — live music, mostly fiddle and acoustic instruments, the kind of thing where musicians show up and play for the pleasure of it rather than for a ticketed audience. It runs from around 8 p.m. and doesn’t cost anything extra beyond whatever you’re drinking. Thursday through Saturday nights tend to bring louder, more contemporary live acts, so the crowd and the energy shift accordingly.

The staff has been there long enough to know regulars by name, and that changes the atmosphere. It’s not performatively friendly — it’s just functional and comfortable in the way that places get when they’ve been doing the same thing for a long time without chasing trends.

Parking in the lot is free and easy, which matters more than it should. If you’re driving from Old Town, it’s roughly ten minutes up Quaker Lane. No reservations needed for bar seating; for the dining room on a Friday or Saturday night, calling ahead is smarter than hoping for the best.

Auld Shebeen doesn’t need to be discovered. It just needs to be on your rotation.
